The EssentialTech Centre at EPFL implements the Tech4Dev programme, a grant initiative designed to support the development of high-impact technologies for low- and middle-income countries. The program promotes cross-sector collaboration between NGOs, the scientific community (from EPFL and other universities), and local stakeholders, with the support of governments and international organizations. Each partnership is initiated, funded, and supported by Tech4Dev to help projects advance along their development journey. Under the supervision of the Head of the Sustainable Development Division and in close collaboration with the Program Manager, the Project Manager will beresponsible for managing the project portfolio in line with the defined strategy.

As Head of the Humanitarian Division at the EPFL EssentialTech Centre, you will lead and shape the Centre’s humanitarian strategy under the supervision of the Director. You will serve as a thought leader in humanitarian engineering, able to bridge long-term strategic thinking with pragmatic, hands-on collaboration with EPFL researchers and students.
With a focus on growth, visibility, and impact, you will work closely with the heads of the Centre’s other two divisions (Sustainable Development and PeaceTech) to create synergies, align projects, and deliver added value for EPFL and its external partners, including NGOs, foundations and academic institutions.

Within the PeaceTech division of the EPFL EssentialTech Centre on the Lausanne campus, the Program Coordinator directly contributes to implementing and monitoring the division’s activities. In collaboration with and under the direction of the Head of Divisoin, he/she coordinates various projects — including the development of new initiatives ,partnership creation, fundraising, event coordination, and operational monitoring of cross-cutting activities — ensuring that ideas, projects, and resources are aligned with strategic priorities and produce lasting impact.
This role involves close collaboration with the Centre team, EPFL laboratories, other academic institutions, and strategic partners to ensure the quality, relevance, and reach of the initiatives. The position requires a person who is autonomous, structured, proactive, and possessing strong team spirit and integrity. The Coordinator should be dynamic, creative, and have an entrepreneurial mindset, capable of generating ideas and turning them into concrete outcomes, thereby strengthening the division’s capacity for action.

The RenAllCare project aims to improve access to hemodialysis for the treatment of acute kidney injury (AKI) in low-resource settings. One of its key components is the development of an innovative dialysis generator designed to be robust, efficient, and adapted to challenging environments.
Several aspects of the system’s development are open for student projects across various engineering disciplines, including:
· Critical review of key functional subsystems: In-depth literature and technical analyses of component such as heat exchangers, peristaltic pumps, and heating systems.
Focus & Skills: literature review, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, thermal design, pneumatics, system engineering.
· Comparative study of sorbent regeneration technologies
Focus & Skills: literature review, material science, chemistry
· Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of dialysis consumables: Evaluation of the environmental impact of various consumable designs to inform system development.
Focus & Skills: environmental science, material science, sustainability.
The scope and objectives of each project will be defined in collaboration with the supervisor, based on the type and duration of the student engagement (Bachelor project, semester project, etc.).

As part of the GlobalO2 project, we are developing an oxygen concentrator specifically designed for low-resource environments. The system uses novel adsorbent materials and features an nnovative control and power architecture, designed to enhance durability, autonomy, and overall efficiency.
Several aspects of the prototype’s development are open for student projects across various engineering disciplines (STI), including:
· Development of a compressor driver with integration of diagnostics and datalogging hardware (sensors, memory).
Focus and skills: PCB design, simulation, firmware development, powerelectronics, magnetics, BLDC control
· Development of the main control board and/or firmware
Focus and skills: PCB design, microcontrollers, C, C++, embedded systems
· Design of a grid fault detection module for power quality monitoring and event logging.
Focus and skills: signal processing, PCB design, firmware, machine learning, edge AI
· Conceptualisation and prototyping of adaptive air filters combining mechanical structures and sensor-based monitoring.
Focus and skills: simulation, mechanical engineering, 3D design, CAD, signal processing, PCB design, sensors.
· System-level integration of electronics, thermal management, mechanical structures, and user interface.

As part of the GlobalNeoNat project, we are developing a neonatal incubator specifically designed for low-resource environments. The system is built around an innovative thermal battery using phase-change materials (PCM) and a novel air circulation system.
