T4D Computational Design for Resilient Shelters
Flood-resistant shelters using sustainable materials to improve housing in flood-prone areas

Location : South Sudan
Problem
Floods in South Sudan affect over 1 million people annually, worsening with climate change. Vulnerable communities, particularly in developing economies, face greater threats due to limited capacity to adapt and respond, making them highly susceptible to recurring natural disasters.
Challenge
How to design resilient shelter that respect local socio-technical context?
Solution
New flood-resilient shelter solutions optimized for material use, cost, and versatility, that consider local construction customs, materials, and skills.
Impact
- Flood Resilience: The project provides durable shelters specifically designed to withstand seasonal flooding, ensuring better protection for vulnerable communities.
- Local Empowerment: It utilizes local materials and construction methods, promoting skill development and boosting the local economy by training local workers.
- Sustainability: The shelters are designed for longevity, reducing waste and the need for frequent rebuilding, which lowers long-term resource and energy consumption.
- Community Involvement: Local communities are actively involved in the design, construction, and feedback process, ensuring the shelters meet their needs and are culturally appropriate.
